OWNER/PRESIDENT/LEAD INSTRUCTOR
Dave Kopenhaver, native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania has served communities for the past twenty-nine years. He began his law enforcement career in 1991 serving six years in the United States Marine Corps as a military police officer. After being honorably discharged, he started his civilian law enforcement career in South Carolina and is recently retired.
Over the past twenty three years he has held several leadership positions such as the Coordinator of the 14th Circuit Law Enforcement Network and South Carolina Impaired Driving Coordinator (DRE Coordinator). Dave has served as an instructor at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in the Traffic Safety Unit having trained 150 DRE’s and over 3,000 officers in field sobriety and DUI enforcement. In addition to South Carolina, he has presented across the country at industry conferences and law enforcement training courses.
With his education and expertise in standardize field sobriety testing Dave has been qualified as an expert witness in municipal magistrate, state courts and has been disposed as a expert witness in federal courts.
Dave has volunteered on his off hours as an impaired driving education expert speaker and has participated in a number of community impact panels. He has been fortunate enough to be recognized by several organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, SC Office of Highway Safety, American Legion, SC National Safety Council and the National Criminal Enforcement Association.
INSTRUCTOR – PHILLIP DARNELL
Phillip Darnell was born and raised Hendersonville, North Carolina, and graduated from North Carolina State University in 1991. He began his law enforcement career in 1994 with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. A veteran of the Naval Reserve, he was Honorably Discharged after nine years of service. He is currently a supervisor in the Traffic Safety Unit of a local Sheriff’s Department in South Carolina.
Over the last twenty-five years, Phillip has served as a Trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol and an Instructor with the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. While an Instructor at the Academy, Phillip taught collision reconstruction, field sobriety and breath testing, and other traffic related courses.
Phillip has been invited to present at national and regional conferences and has taught courses in multiple states across the country. He is an accredited collision reconstructionist through ACTAR and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). Through his education, training, and experience, Phillip has been qualified as an expert in both civil and criminal courts in multiple states.
Phillip enjoys spending his free time with his family. He and his wife have three grown children, four grandchildren, and two dogs. He has volunteered over the years giving back to the community by volunteering in sports. Phillip has coached football and baseball from the recreational level to high school.
INSTRUCTOR – KARLEN SENN
Karlen Senn practices law with O’Shea Law Firm LLC and is focuses her practice on personal injury litigation.
Born and raised in the Columbia area, Karlen graduated from Hammond School. Karlen attended Converse College where she earned degrees in both history and politics. After graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2014, Karlen became a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Robert E. Hood of the South Carolina Circuit Court.
Prior to joining the Mike Kelly Law Group, Karlen was an Assistant Solicitor in the Fifth Judicial Circuit. An experienced trial attorney, Karlen represented the state of South Carolina in many jury trials, both in Circuit and Magistrate Courts of Richland County.
Karlen devotes nearly all of her spare time to her daughter, sharing with her a love of the beach and the outdoors.
INSTRUCTOR – PATRICK SHARPE
Pat was born and raised in Columbia. He attended Dreher High School downtown and went to the University of South Carolina where he obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting with a minor in Political Science. While attending USC, Pat found his love for helping people in need while working for attorney Richard “Dick” Harpootlian.
After graduating from USC, Pat went on to obtain his law degree from the Charleston School of Law. While in law school, Pat clerked for several top attorneys in Harpootlian, including A. Camden “Cam” Lewis, and Keith Babcock, as well as both the 1st Circuit Solicitors Office and the 9th Circuit Solicitors Office.
Upon Graduating from law school and passing the bar he worked at the Richland County Public Defender’s office where he handled over 700 General Sessions cases. He then prosecuted DUIs for the City of Columbia. After a short time as a prosecutor, Pat found himself really missing helping those in need, so he branched out and started the Law Office of Patrick C. Sharpe, L.L.C.
Pat lives in Columbia with his wife, and their two dogs and two cats. In his free time, Pat enjoys watching sports and spending time with his family.
INSTRUCTOR – NEAL D. TRUSLOW
Neal was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, where he attended Cardinal Newman High School. He is a graduate of both The Honors College of the University of South Carolina (with Honors) and the University of South Carolina School of Law.
He was commissioned as a Logistics Officer in the South Carolina Army National Guard in 2006, and has served as a JAG Officer with the South Carolina Army National Guard since 2009. Neal also works with the South Carolina National Guard’s State Partnership Program with the Republic of Colombia, where he collaborates with the highest levels of Colombian defense forces to enact a comprehensive, transparent military justice system. In 2009, he joined his father at Truslow & Truslow.
INSTRUCTOR – Johnny J. Evans
Johnny J. Evans grew up in Walterboro, SC. He graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in 1993 where he was a member of the Honor Court. Mr. Evans earned his Juris Doctor magna cum laude from the Charleston School of Law in 2015.
Mr. Evans currently is attorney at Thurmond Kirchner & Timbes, P.A. who focuses on criminal defense. He spent nearly the last two decades as a law enforcement officer in the State of South Carolina where he worked a variety of cases from simple traffic tickets to homicides and simple narcotics possession to federal wiretap investigations.
INSTRUCTOR – Andrea Grinstead
Criminal Investigation Division Lieutenant – Irmo Police Department
Andrea was born and raised in Suwannee County, Florida, and relocated to South Carolina during her high school years. Her Grandfather and Uncle served in Law Enforcement and she decided to follow in their footsteps, becoming the third generation in her family.
She graduated from Midlands Technical College in 2003 with an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. She served as a Reserve Police Officer with the Swansea Police Department, where her Grandfather was the Chief of Police during the 1970’s. She was also the first female officer in the Department’s history.
She was hired by the Irmo Police Department in 2006, serving in the Patrol Division. In 2010, she recieved a MADD HERO Award for her efforts in taking impaired drivers off the roadway. She spent 10 years in Patrol, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Throughout this time she realized the importance of detailed and accurate report writing.
In 2017, she transferred to the position of Criminal Investigations Division Sergeant, overseeing and investigating everything from larceny to major crimes. She was promoted in 2020 to Lieutenant and currently serves and the Special Operations Division Commander.
INSTRUCTOR – Michael Blute
Michael Blute grew up just outside Boston, Massachusetts where he joined the United State Army in 1999. After a five-year enlistment, Michael moved to Georgia to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Gwinnett County Police Department. Michael quickly gained a passion for traffic and DUI enforcement. After five years on patrol, Michael was selected to a member of the agencies DUI task force where he would spend the next 3 years accumulating more than 800 DUI arrests. Michael attended Drug Recognition Expert School while a member of the DUI task force, which reinforced his passion for DUI enforcement and a new passion of teaching. Becoming a SFST instructor in 2009 and a DRE instructor 2011, Michael began to instructor in impaired driving as much as possible, which allowed him to transfer to the training division. Michael was promoted to Sergeant after spending two years as a full-time instructor and he eventually returned to the DUI task force as the supervisor.
Having grown up in the north east, Michael admired State Troopers and the prestige of the title. Michael took an opportunity and became an Arizona State Trooper, where he would spend the next five years – four of those years as a member of Arizona Highway Patrol’s DUI squad.
In 2020, Michael jumped on another opportunity and became the state of Georgia’s 7th Drug Recognition Expert State Coordinator. Michael joined the Georgia Public Safety Training Center as a member of the traffic section, coordinating the DRE and ARIDE programs. Having spent five years in Arizona, where Michael became certified in phlebotomy, Michael designed and built a law enforcement phlebotomy program for Georgia.
Michael has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and has traveled and presented to numerous conferences on the local, county, state, and national level of various topics in impaired driving. Michael has amassed more than 2,000 DUI arrests in his career which translated to hundreds of hours of court time with countless jury and bench trials in Georgia and Arizona.
Michael resides in Warner Robins, GA with his wife and high school aged son and enjoys outside activities and his home gym. (Michael has a grown daughter who lives outside Atlanta, GA)
INSTRUCTOR – Jack Frost
Jack Frost. Attorney at Law was born in Virginia and moved to Summerville, SC with his family at the age of eight. He graduated from Summerville High School and went on to study political science at the College of Charleston. Having always possessed an interest in the law, he followed in his Grandfather’s footsteps and pursued a career in law enforcement. His career began with the Summerville Police Department, and he eventually retired from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office in 2013.
Over the span of fourteen years, Jack was fortunate enough to gain vast practical experience in the criminal justice field through his work as a Police Officer and Corporal with the Summerville Police Department and as a Deputy, Master Deputy and Detective with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. He has conducted extensive narcotics and money laundering investigations to include search and arrest warrant preparation and service, clandestine Methamphetamine Lab investigations, Federal T-3 wiretap investigations, mobile and stationary surveillance and undercover operations. Jack was also an entry team member for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team with duties including dynamic entries, high risk warrant service, fugitive apprehension, training operations, dignitary protection details and firearms proficiency.
Along with countless law enforcement training and certifications, that include designation as a Type 1 SWAT Operator by the Department of Homeland Security and DEA Basic Narcotics Investigations certification, Jack holds an Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Trident Technical College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Police Administration from Strayer University and a Juris Doctor from the Charleston School of Law.
An avid golfer, Jack believes that his astute attention to customer service was formed during his time as a caddy at the world-famous Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, where he also served as personal security for Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh during the 2012 PGA Championship.
Jack possess an intimate understanding of the South Carolina criminal justice system and strives to apply his wealth of law enforcement experience and knowledge to all of the Frost Law Group clients. Anne Horne was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in various areas throughout South Carolina. From a young age, Anne knew she wanted to help others by becoming a Police Officer. In 2012, she began her career in Law Enforcement as a Patrol Officer with a municipality. During this time, she gained several certifications to include becoming a Field Training Officer.
In 2017, she graduated from Grand Canyon University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management; one of the only members of her family to do so.
Also in 2017, Anne transitioned to a new position as a K9 handler, with a specialty in Narcotics Detection. She was partnered with a Belgian Malinois, K9 Vera. They worked together for five and a half years until a health issue caused K9 Vera to retire early. K9 Vera now spends her time at home with Anne and her family, where she is spoiled rotten.
Due to K9 Vera’s retirement, Anne once again transitioned into a new position, this time as an Investigator. As an Investigator, she has worked on various cases such as assaults, deaths, internal affairs, narcotics, etc.
Anne’s 11-year career has afforded her the opportunity to serve the communities of Columbia and the State of South Carolina.
